A xerophyte is any plant that grows best in arid places. A xerophyte is not necessarily xerophilous, which means that it likes dryness. Though it might–in theory–prefer humid conditions, it cannot compete against stronger plants and so must stick to dry places where the competitors are absent.

Xerophytes have developped different strategies to cope with the aridness, for example storing water in the tissue or reduction of the respiration by peculiarities of the skin.
