Humus is the decomposed organic substance in the soil. It is an important part of every soil because of its capacity to store nutrients. In places where there is little humus in the ground–for example in the humid tropics where it is mineralized quickly–nutrients are washed out more easily.

An advantage of fertilizing with manure or compost as opposed to chemical fertilizers is that it adds not only nutrients but also humus and therefore helps to keep the nutrients in the ground.
