Primary production

Primary production is the production of organic matter by plants and microorganisms (primary producers). Primary production always means that organisms fix carbon coming from carbon dioxide, mainly by photosynthesis, in rare cases by chemosynthesis.

There is to be distinguished: The gross primary production is what the producer first produces in the synthesis process. The net primary production is what stays after the loss of organic matter by respiration of the primary producers.

Different formations of vegetation have different net primary production. The biggest net primary production is that of the tropical rain forest. It fixes the greatest amount of carbon and so produces the greatest amount of oxygen. That's why it is called the lung of the planet.

It is important to understand that the fixed carbon usually stays within the cycle of life, within the biosphere, except in cases when organisms leave the aerobic milieu, for example trees that fall into bogs.

To avoid misinterpretations: The primary production does not say anything about thepossibilities of regeneration. Tropical rain forests are very vulnerable.
